If you are living with a disability or caring for a child or adult who does, or you are an occupational therapist, physiotherapist or other healthcare professional, Independent Living is a good place to look for impartial advice about products and services to help with mobility and independence. We have buying guides for equipment such as rise and recline chairs, mobility scooters and wheelchairs, hoists and transfer aids.
Our online News Centre features topical news stories, as well as interesting case studies and product developments, guest blogs and podcasts.
We also have an Advice Centre which is full of information and resources about welfare benefits, diet and keeping fit, making your home safe and accessible, and legal and statutory guidance (on subjects including safe manual handling, carers’ support, the Mental Capacity Act, transporting wheelchairs, help with holidays, and so on).
Over the years, we’ve been able to help lots of people who are fighting the system, from unfair parking fines and rejected Blue Badge applications, to questionable benefit decisions and Motability vehicle issues.
We’ve given advice about VAT exemption on disability equipment, dealing with NHS Wheelchair Services, applying for Disabled Facilities Grants and NHS Continuing Healthcare. We’ve helped to support important causes such as the Changing Places campaign for fully accessible public toilet facilities throughout the country.
As well as the web platform, we also produce the popular weekly Independent Living Newsletter. This highlights the latest developments in health and social care, scientific research, legislation changes, health and nutrition, benefit reforms and any other issues likely to be of interest to readers and visitors.
